Summer is coming and it is time to talk about shorts. Specifically shorts with real pockets – because pocketless workout shorts are basically useless and we all know it.
As a runner and active woman over 50 I have very specific opinions about workout shorts. They need to stay in place. They need pockets that actually hold things. And they need to be comfortable enough for real workouts not just looking cute at the gym.
I have run hundreds of miles in these shorts. Here are the best workout shorts with pockets for women – what I actually wear and love.

A Note on Compression vs Non-Compression
Before we get to specific picks let me address something honestly. I cannot run in non-compression shorts because my thighs are too thick – and I say that with zero shame because I know I am not alone.
Non-compression shorts ride up and bunch in a way that makes running genuinely uncomfortable.
Compression biker shorts solve this completely. They stay in place, move with your body, and are honestly some of the most comfortable workout bottoms available regardless of thigh size. Every compression short on this list has been run-tested by someone with real thighs and they all pass.

ODODOS 5 Inch Tummy Control Biker Shorts

These are a personal favorite and one of my most worn pairs. The fabric is incredibly soft, the high waistband provides real tummy control without digging in, and they stay in place through an entire run without sliding down or riding up.
The leg band is the detail I appreciate most – it does not ride up on me which is the number one complaint about biker shorts that fit poorly. Pockets are included and deep enough to be actually useful. A really well designed short that delivers on every promise.
Great for: Running, cycling, Peloton rides, yoga, everyday wear

Baleaf Biker Shorts

I own three pairs of these and that tells you everything. What sets the Baleaf apart is the inseam options – you can choose from a 3 inch, 5 inch, or 8 inch length depending on your preference and the activity. That kind of sizing versatility is rare and genuinely useful. The fabric is soft and supportive and the waistband stays put through any workout. If you are not sure what length works best for you the variety of options makes it easy to find your fit.
Great for: Running, cross training, women who want inseam options

CRZ YOGA Naked Feeling Biker Shorts

CRZ YOGA makes some of my favorite workout pieces and the Naked Feeling biker shorts live up to the name. The fabric is so soft it genuinely feels like a second skin and the deep pockets are perfectly placed and actually hold your phone securely. The compression is supportive without feeling restrictive and the waistband lies flat and smooth. A premium feel at a very reasonable price point.
Great for: Running, yoga, Peloton rides, women who want ultra soft fabric

Best Traditional Running Shorts
Stelle 2 in 1 Running Shorts

For women who prefer a more traditional running short look the Stelle 2 in 1 is an excellent option. The inner compression liner provides the support and coverage you need during a run while the outer short gives you that classic running shorts look. What really sets these apart is the pocket situation – four pockets total, two of which zip closed for secure storage of your phone, keys, or cards. The split hem on the outer short adds extra comfort and range of motion during your stride. A really thoughtfully designed running short that covers all the bases.
Great for: Road running, trail running, women who prefer traditional running short style

Best Post Run Shorts
BMJL Women’s Athletic Shorts 2.5 Inch

Not every pair of shorts needs to be a compression short. After a run when I want something cute and comfortable to wear around the house or run errands in I reach for these BMJL athletic shorts. The 2.5 inch length is fun and flattering and they are genuinely comfortable for post workout lounging. I would not run in these personally – non-compression shorts do not work for my body during a run – but for everything after the run they are perfect. Cute, comfortable, and exactly what you want to change into after a sweaty workout.
Great for: Post workout, lounging, errands, casual wear

Finding the Right Short for You
Here is how I think about it:
For running and high impact workouts: Compression biker shorts are your best friend – ODODOS, Baleaf, or CRZ YOGA depending on your fabric and fit preferences.
For a traditional running look with serious pocket storage: The Stelle 2 in 1 gives you compression underneath and a classic short on top with four pockets.
For after your workout: The BMJL shorts are cute, comfortable, and perfect for everything that happens after you cross the finish line.
The most important thing is finding shorts that make you feel good and stay in place so you can focus on your workout instead of adjusting your clothes. Life is too short for shorts that ride up.
