Let’s be honest — nobody wants a $500 piece of equipment collecting dust in the corner. If you’re looking for effective workout equipment for women over 50 who want to get stronger, boost cardio fitness, and feel like they actually accomplished something while working out at home, you’ve come to the right place.

I’ve been running for over 25 years, owned a Peloton bike since 2019, and lifting weights every winter, so I’m not here to sell you on gimmicks. This is the equipment I know works – for real women with real lives.

Strength & Resistance

Resistance Bands Set

This is the one piece of equipment I tell every woman to buy first. Resistance bands are low-impact, joint-friendly, and incredibly effective for building the kind of strength that matters as we get older. A good set includes multiple resistance levels so you can progress over time. They’re also small enough to tuck in a drawer, which is a win. I like them for glute walks!

Shop my pick: Walito Resistance Bands, Fabric Exercise Bands for Glute and Leg Strength

Look for: A set with at least 3-5 resistance levels, fabric bands for comfort, and a storage bag.

Adjustable Dumbbells

If you’re serious about strength training, adjustable dumbbells are a game changer. One set replaces an entire rack, which is perfect if you’re working out in a bedroom or living room. I reach for mine constantly in the winter months when getting outside isn’t always an option.

Shop my pick: CAP Barbell 55 lb Pair of Adjustable Dumbbells with Full Rotation Copper Handle

Look for: A set that adjusts quickly, has a comfortable grip, and goes up to at least 25-30 lbs.

Kettlebell
A single kettlebell is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can own. Swings, deadlifts, goblet squats – you can get a full-body workout with one piece of equipment. For women over 50, kettlebell training is especially great for building hip and glute strength. I want to be sure I can get myself up off the floor for many years to come!

Look for: A 15-20 lb kettlebell with a wide, smooth handle for comfortable grip.

Cardio Equipment

Stationary Bike or Cycling App Subscription
I’ve had my Peloton since 2019 and it has permanently changed how I think about indoor cardio. I had taken zero spin classes prior to buying my bike in March 2019. As of today I have done 5,226 Peloton workouts. 1,871 cycling classes, 1,177 strength classes, 883 running classes and so many others. Peloton has an awesome variety of content!

Oh – maybe you want to try the Peloton app FREE for 60 days? Use my invite link here!

Or have you been considering buying a Peloton bike, tread, or row? Use this link to get up to $600 off your cart!

But you don’t need a Peloton specifically – there are excellent budget-friendly stationary bikes that pair with free or low-cost cycling apps. The key is finding cardio you’ll actually show up for. For women over 50, cycling is easy on the knees while still delivering a serious workout.

Shop my pick: YOSUDA Exercise Bike for Home with Exclusive App, Magnetic Indoor Cycling Bike with 300 pound Weight Capacity, Low Noise, Tablet Holder

Look for: A bike with adjustable resistance, a comfortable seat, and handlebar connectivity for your phone or tablet.

Walking Treadmill (Under-Desk Style)
Walking gets no respect! A compact walking treadmill lets you get steps in while watching TV, taking calls, or just moving your body on days when a full workout isn’t happening. For women over 50, consistent low-impact movement does wonders for metabolism, mood, and joint health. I use my for 20 minutes in the morning before work just to get a few thousand steps in the bank before I lose track!

I suggest getting a very simple model, no need for incline here. With these inexpensive models let’s face it – there’s a good chance it will break. Keep it basic. But don’t skip on the speed. You will want to go faster than 3.0 miles per hour, especially as you are on it more and more! The handlebar is handy.

Shop my pick: Walking Pad Treadmill for Home – Folding Treadmills with Handle Bar Portable Compact Fold up Indoor Foldable Handles

Look for: A model with a simple speed dial, low profile, and foldable design for easy storage.

Jump Rope
Don’t sleep on the jump rope. It’s cheap, it’s portable, and a 10-minute jump rope session is serious cardio. Weighted jump ropes add an upper body element that makes it even more effective. I keep one near the door and head to my back deck on days when I just need to move but don’t have much time. There are some great jump rope workouts to follow on Youtube.

hop my pick: Elite Jumps Adjustable Jump Rope with Unbreakable Handles, Non-Kinking Cord & Smooth Rotation for Strength

Look for: An adjustable length rope with comfortable handles. Weighted is a bonus, but not necessary to get an effective (exhausing) workout!

A Note on Getting Started

You don’t need all of this at once. If I were starting from scratch, I’d grab a resistance band set and a stationary bike – and build from there. The goal is to create a home setup you’ll actually use consistently, not a showroom you feel guilty about.

Start simple. Stay consistent. The results will come.
