Best Running Shoes for Women Over 50 (From a Neutral Road Runner Who Has Tried Dozens)

I have been running since 1997. That is nearly 30 years of road miles, worn out soles, and hard learned lessons about what happens when you run in the wrong shoes.

Here is the short version — your shoes matter more than almost anything else in your running life. Fit. Running shoes should have about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Too tight and you will lose toenails. Too loose and you will get blisters. Always try shoes on later in the day when your feet are slightly swollen.

A Note on Shoe Rotation

How Often to Replace Your Running Shoes

Most running shoes last between 300 and 500 miles. After that the cushioning breaks down even if the shoe still looks fine on the outside. If your legs and joints start feeling more tired than usual on runs it is often a sign your shoes have passed their prime.
